Dr Foster offers poor value

8th February 2007

A new report from the National Audit Office says healthcare information analysts Dr Foster Intelligence is not providing value for money.

Dr Foster Intelligence was set up by the Department of Health and health informatics company Dr Foster Ltd. The NHS paid out £12m, up to £4m more than it was worth, says the report.

The report said that good quality data was vital to enable the NHS to measure its performance, but historically the DH and NHS had not effectively used routinely collected data for this purpose. Dr Foster Intelligence was set up to ensure this available information was fully used.

But the NAO found it could not provide evidence that Dr Foster Intelligence offered value for money, because it had not been put out to tender to ensure fair competition.
