Drug-resistant TB confirmed

25th March 2008

Doctors have confirmed they are treating Scotland’s first diagnosed case of the drug-resistant XDR tuberculosis strain.

The man, who is reported to have come to the UK from Somalia, is undergoing treatment in isolation at the Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow. His condition is resistant to traditional antibiotics and has to be treated with a cocktail of drugs, though doctors stress there is no risk to the public and that they have taken prompt measures to manage any chance of the strain being spread.
