Drug warnings ignored by doctors

17th June 2008

The BBC's File On 4 programme has found that GPs are issuing regular prescriptions for strong psychiatric medication despite a 2004 safety warning.

The programme spoke to 355 GPs and discovered that over 50% issued prescriptions for risperidone and olanzapine. The Committee on Safety of Medicines said in 2004: "Evidence reviewed by the Committee on Safety of Medicines indicates an increased risk of stroke which particularly applies when these drugs are used by elderly people with dementia."
