Drugs prescribed by eye experts

29th August 2007

High Street eye specialists in England are to be given new powers to issue prescriptions.

Under government plans, optometrists will be given extra training that will allow them to prescribe for conditions such as dry eye syndrome and conjunctivitis as part of an effort to free up GPs to concentrate on other areas.

Some optometrists are already able to write drug prescriptions, but still need them signed off by doctors. While the government say it will be more convenient for patients GPs the scheme will need to be properly monitored.
