E numbers warning needed

14th June 2007

Independent watchdog the Food Commission has said that drinks and foods which have certain artificial additives in them should be clearly labelled with health warnings outlining what they contain.

The commission found that while additives used in medicines need to be labelled the same rule did not apply to food, cake, sweets and drinks containing E number additives, some of which may cause consumers an allergic reaction.

The Food Commission said better labelling would allow people to identify and avoid the additives that could harm them.
