Early death linked to lack of sleep

5th May 2010

Researchers have warned that getting less than six hours sleep a night can result in a premature death.

A UK team working with colleagues in Italy found that people who regularly had such little sleep were 12% more likely to die over a 25-year period than those who got six to eight hours.

There was also a link between early death and sleeping for more than nine hours.

However, the study – reported in the journal Sleep and based on 1.5m people in 16 countries - said that may be more associated with underlying ill health.

Professor Francesco Cappuccio, leader of the Sleep, Health and Society Programme at the University of Warwick, said: "Modern society has seen a gradual reduction in the average amount of sleep people take and this pattern is more common amongst full-time workers, suggesting that it may be due to societal pressures for longer working hours and more shift-work.

"On the other hand, the deterioration of our health status is often accompanied by an extension of our sleeping time."

But he said that more work was needed to understand exactly why sleep seemed to be so important for good health.

The latest study reviewed earlier studies from the UK, US and European and East Asian countries on sleep and mortality.

However, Professor Jim Horne of the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre warned that sleep can also be affected by many diseases and conditions, including depression and that getting more sleep may not necessarily lead to a longer life.

Sleep has two states viz. dreaming and deep sleep. Though normally a person sleeps for six hours in actuality deep sleep state is about two hours. In dream state mind works and manipulates though body, sense and action organs are resting. The real rest comes in deep sleep when mind rests and mind rests in life force. Then mind and body get abundant energy and that is the clue for living long. By meditation on life force one can bring the state of deep sleep consciously thereby reducing the time span of sleep.
