Eight-year-old fighting 'ovary cancer'

22nd May 2009

An eight-year-old girl from East Yorkshire is fighting a rare form of ovarian cancer.

Sophie Fry from Driffield had been suffering abdominal pains and was diagnosed with the germ cell cancer earlier this year. She had surgery to remove one of her ovaries, responded well to chemotherapy, and is still undergoing treatment though doctors say she is expected to make a full recovery.

Dr Bob Phillips, the specialist who treated Sophie at St James' Hospital in Leeds, said she would still be able to have children as her remaining ovary will compensate for the one that was removed.
