EU-wide organ donation

21st July 2006

21072006_mortuary1.jpgThe European commission has launched a public consultation to look at how the EU can improve the quality and safety of organ donations.

The commission wants to review the existing rules on organ donation and transplants as EU member states face an increasing shortage of donors and a rise in organ trafficking. Some European countries invest more money than others in organ donation, searching for donors and transplants; discrepancies between the national systems currently hamper cross-border organ donations, opening the way for even more organ trafficking.
