Europe donor card call

22nd April 2008

Euro MPs have voted in favour of a donor card which will be eligible across countries in the European Union and could help to combat the shortage of available organs.

Around 40,000 people across Europe are on the waiting list for an organ. The UK currently has an "opt in" system for donors, although the country's chief medical officer has said an "opt-out" process needs to be considered because of a lack of available organs.
