Fall in abortion rate

26th May 2010

The Department of Health has released figures which show the number of abortions in England and Wales dropped last year.

There were 189,100 abortions in 2009, equating to 17.5 per 1,000 women aged 15-44, in comparison to 18.2 in 2008. Ann Furedi, of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, the UK's biggest provider of abortions, said: "Abortion figures tend to fluctuate slightly year-on-year so we can't call this a trend yet, especially with the background of the last few decades' gradual rise."
