Fight to keep cancer unit open

30th October 2007

Primary care trusts' plans to close a leading cancer unit from the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (RD&E) have been criticised by patients and staff.

Devon and Cornwall primary care trusts plan to transfer the upper gastrointestinal unit to Plymouth. PCT spokesman Dr Kevin Snee said a single unit in Plymouth was a better location.

Angela Pedder, the hospital's chief executive, said the department trained surgeons and added: "We also have patients referring themselves via their GPs from Stoke, Newcastle and Cambridge wanting this surgery which is not available anywhere else in the UK."

Patients have said they will fight to keep the unit at the hospital.
