Flexible approach to longer hours

12th March 2008

Some Primary Care Trusts across England appear to be adopting a more flexible approach to allowing family doctors to provide extended hours cover.

GPC negotiator Chaand Nagpaul said the PCTs were supplementing the directed enhanced service (DES) with additional payments to make the deal more attractive. He suggested PCTs were taking a pragmatic approach to make sure practices did not simply refuse to provide extended hours because it was not financially attractive. Suffolk LMC chair Bill Robinson said PMS practices will also want to bring in income in other ways.
