Flu death toll rises to 17

People with chronic illnesses and pregnant women are being urged to have the flu jab as figures showed cases have doubled in the last week.

Doctors are warning that the flu season is well under way and the H1N1 swine flu virus is one of three strains in circulating with 14 deaths linked to swine flu so far this winter - mostly in the under 65s and people who have long-term illnesses – with a further three deaths linked to the B flu strain that is in circulation. Six of the deaths occurred in children under 18.
