Former health secretary elected health committee chair

17th June 2010

Former health secretary Stephen Dorrell has been elected chair of the Commons health committee.

During his term as health secretary (1995-97), Mr Dorrell oversaw the implementation of GP fund holding but in the run up to the general election was critical of the new health secretary Andrew Lansley, saying he wanted to see “a little sunlight” brought into his vision. Mr Dorrell said he aims to provide scrutiny and advice to the government on health policy and look at long term care of the elderly and “unfinished business on social care”.
