Foundation trust status for hospital

2nd December 2008

The Great Western Hospital in Wiltshire has been awarded foundation trust status.

It is run by the former Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust, which had to meet strict criteria before the status – which will allow it great financial freedom - was granted. Another service it hopes to provide is a midwife-led birthing centre. At present there are currently 109 NHS foundation trusts in England but over the next couple of years all hospital trusts are expected to achieve foundation status.
