Free prescriptions to end

17th June 2009

Free prescriptions will be scrapped in Wales if the Conservative Party gains power in the assembly.

The Tories say they believe that those who can afford it should pay a modest charge for their prescriptions, which have been free for the past two years. They say the move is necessary because of the huge financial pressures that the NHS in Wales is now facing. However, the Welsh Assembly Government said the free prescriptions policy was a long-term investment in improving health in Wales.
