Gastric bypass operations risen six-fold

24th August 2012

Figures from the NHS Information Centre have revealed a dramatic increase in gastric bypass surgery in the last five years.

The operation costing between £8,000 and £14,000 was carried out 5,407 times last year, compared to 858 procedures in 2006/07. There is also a rise in the number of gastric band procedures – costing £5-7,000 - being carried out with 1,316 operations conducted in England in 2011/12, which is twice as many as in 2006/07. Experts say the gastric bypass is among the “clinically effective and cost-effective procedures.”
