Gates donation for Global Fund

11082006_dollar_health1.jpgBill Gates has pledged $500m (€390m, £260m) to the UN-backed Global Fund to fight Aids, TB and malaria, reinforcing his role as the single largest philanthropist supporting global health.

Mr Gates’ helped establish the Global Fund and has advised since its inception in 2002, with two previous contributions of $150m.

The gift, made via the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, gives a boost to efforts by the Global Fund to raise large amounts of long-term support to fund prevention and treatment of the world’s most lethal infectious diseases.

The gift comes at a crucial time for the Global Fund, following pledges by the G8 leading nations last year to scale up to “as close as possible? to universal treatment for those who need it for HIV medicines in the developing world by 2010.
