GP practices to get ratings

27th May 2008

GP practices look set to be rated on performance with a new balance scorecard system.

Primary care tsar Dr David Colin-Thome has recommended that Primary Care Trusts commission scorecards and publish ratings on trust websites, as a way of managing practice performance. This could include school-report style marks of A, B or C for a range of clinical and organisational indicators.

Health secretary Alan Johnson has welcomed the move but GP leaders fear the scorecards will be used to place practices in league tables.
