GPs face 'franchise threat'

20th November 2007

A primary care trust has caused outrage among GPs over its plan to franchise out health services.

The Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust is currently constructing 24 new surgeries for more than 70 doctors. The Trust has said that the doctors must move into the new premises or "they will bring in the private sector."

The Trust wants to implement a supermarket-style service with many GPs operating under one roof. However many of the doctors who have their own individual practices do not think the new arrangements will be suitable for patients.
