GPs won't work in surgeries offering abortions

10th February 2009

A poll of 480 GPs by the GP newspaper has found that one third would not work in a surgery which offered abortions to its patients.

Over 50% of GPs believed that offering abortions as part of primary care services would cause the number of abortions carried out to increase. Dr Sarah Jarvis, RCGP spokeswoman for women’s health, said: "I have already seen an increase in the number of women coming forward for abortions. Many are now using it as a method of contraception. I certainly would not want to offer my patients medical abortions."
