Guidance on fit notes to replace sick notes

19th February 2010

The Department for Work and Pensions has made guidance on plans to replace sick notes with fit notes available to GPs.

The fit note, which replaces the sick note on 6 April, has been developed following consultation with the RCGP, BMA, employers and trade unions and reflects medical evidence that work is good for health and can aid recovery for many health conditions. RCGP chairman Professor Steve Field said the fit note was more in keeping with GPs holistic approach to patient care.
