H1N1 critical care strategy published

11th September 2009

The Department of Health has published a critical care strategy to cope with a potential second wave of the swine flu virus.

The document, which follows a review of NHS critical care capacity and plans to increase this capacity if necessary during a pandemic, sets out how the NHS will double ventilated critical care capacity during the peak of a potential second wave. It outlines a series of whole system measures that can be put in place. In addition, a new Critical Care Clinical Group made up of a number of independent experts in delivering critical care has been formed.
