Health job goes to Alan Johnson

Alan Johnson has been named as the new Health Secretary in Prime Minister Brown's cabinet.

Mr Johnson's appointment follows the resignation of Patricia Hewitt on 27 June. He previously held the position of Secretary of State for Education and Skills. He is the MP for Kingston Upon Hull West and Hussle.

Acting BMA Chairman, Dr Sam Everington, said: "The appointment of a new Health Secretary provides an excellent opportunity for doctors and government to work together to improve patient care."
