Heart reverse surgery joy

27th March 2008

Surgeons at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle have successfully completed a complex eight-hour operation on a three-year-old boy with a “back to front heart.

Alex Hutchinson from Dipton, County Durham, was born with a heart where his arteries were connected to the wrong chambers of his heart. It is the first time surgeons at the hospital have performed the operation to turn a heart around but Alex has now made a full recovery. The hospital now plans to offer the procedure to other children with similar conditions.
