Heart transplants resume

17th January 2008

Heart transplants have resumed in Scotland following a review of the service after a number of patient deaths.

Operations at the Scottish National Heart Transplant Unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary were stopped in December after the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde confirmed that four of the 11 patients who had transplants in 2007 had died within 30 days. Independent experts from other UK transplant centres carried out the review of procedures, interviewed staff and examined patient records and have now given the Glasgow team the go ahead to resume normal services.
