Hewitt may resign

22nd November 2006

Health secretary Patricia Hewitt could be out of a job within months, after she hinted that she may resign if the NHS does not break even at the end of the financial year.

Facing criticism over the expected £1bn overspend this year, Ms Hewitt said she would take 'personal responsibility' if she failed to keep her promise to ensure financial balance in the health service.

Her comments came as she was asked by the Commons select committee whether her job would be at risk if balance was not restored.
