Hewitt resigns

28th June 2007

Patricia Hewitt has left her post as Health Secretary following widespread speculation she would not retain her position in new Prime Minister Gordon Brown's cabinet.

Mr Brown took on his new role on 27 June and immediately received Ms Hewitt's resignation letter confirming her intention to resign, following an earlier discussion with the Prime Minister elect.

Ms Hewitt had previously refused calls to resign over serious criticism of the training system for junior doctors. It is not clear if she will take on another role within the cabinet or rejoin the backbenches.
