HIV contracted from patient

13th February 2008

A verdict of accidental death has been recorded on a nurse who died more than seven years after contracting HIV while taking blood from a patient.

Juliet Young developed AIDS after a needle slipped and pricked her thumb as she took blood from an infected patient at the Maudsley psychiatric hospital in London. The inquest in Southwark heard that although she was wearing gloves, she developed AIDS and died of pneumonia in January last year at the age of 42.
