Homeopathy regulation plans

7th January 2008

A new watchdog, the Natural Healthcare Council, will become the regulator for complementary therapies.

At the current time there is no regulation or body governing therapies such as homeopathy and reflexology.

The group is due to begin work in April this year and has been organised by the Prince of Wales's Foundation for Integrated Health. The Foundation was commissioned by the Department of Health.

It will impose regulations and will be able to "strike off" practitioners it deems unsatisfactory or dangerous. However, practitioners can choose to become Council members or not.

Practitioners will only be able to register with the Council if they have professional qualifications, hold insurance and recognise the body's code of conduct.

Spokesman Ian Cambray Smith said that the problem which faced the public was the existence of "many different types of professional body, there are many different sets of initials that practitioners have after their names and nobody's quite sure what they all mean.

"By bringing things together in this way, it can give the public confidence."

A spokeswoman for the Patients Association stated that patients would have a greater sense of safety because of the new watchdog and they would know who to get in touch with "if they are unhappy with their treatment."

People in Britain are estimated to spend about £130m a year on complementary therapies.

How do I get the three NHS, medical professionsal's 'stuck off' for misgiagnosing my 'advanced' prostate cancer? Complemenary medicine extended my severely disabled son's life by 27 years (a good quality of life) whist NHS medical professionals allowed him to be buried with every operable disability - intact. Complementary medicine will not be responsible for my premature demise from cancer - certain NHS professional will.
