Hospital C diff outbreak, five die

11th November 2009

An outbreak of the Clostridium difficile at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee has killed two hospital patients and contributed to the deaths of three more over a period of 18 days.

Those affected were on hospital’s ward 31, which generally cares for geriatric patients, and has been closed to new admissions. The deaths happened between October 19 and November 6, though the hospital has been dealing with an outbreak since September. Seven of the patients had contracted the more dangerous 027 strain of C diff.
