How Hep C spreads

2nd November 2007

Scientists from the University of Birmingham have discovered that the hepatitis C virus can move from cell to cell in order to overcome the body's immune system.

The research was shared at a conference in Glasgow and could prove why the virus spread so quickly in some people. It could also mean that scientists will have to rethink current treatments which try to interrupt the progress of the virus in the body.

Dr Jennifer Timpe, who presented the research, said: "This is probably why it has been so tricky to tackle...we will have to up our game and find other ways of tackling this relentless virus."
