HPA fined

12th July 2010

The Health Protection Agency has been fined £25,000 for a spill of the E coli bacteria at a plant in North London.

The Old Bailey was told that three workers were in danger of being infected with the bacteria. Judge Martin Stephens said the agency should feel "acute embarrassment" concerning the spill. Health and Safety Executive investigator Jennifer Higham said safety practices were not followed and this exposed "several staff and potentially their families to a real risk of infection".
