HPV vaccine programme extended

23rd July 2008

The Department of Health has announced that the HPV vaccination programme is to be extended to cover girls aged 17-18 from September.

The extension will see an additional 300,000 girls being vaccinated against the risk of cervical cancer on top of the 12 and 13 year olds already scheduled to receive the vaccine in the next school year. The extension was made possible because of savings made in the vaccine procurement process of the Cervarix vaccine, which is produced by GlaxoSmithKline.
