Huge rise in eating disorders

There has been a significant rise in the number of patients admitted to hospital suffering from eating disorders.

Figures released by Hospital Episode Statistics, which provides information for NHS wards, revealed that  84,377 bed days were used by patients with eating disorders, showing an increase from 51,878 in 2002.

Patients aged under 15 represent one fifth of the total figure. The number of anorexic patients admitted to hospital rose 11% in 2006/7.
