Illegal skin bleach warning

15th February 2008

The danger of illegal skin-lightening creams has been issued by doctors after a woman patient developed a hormone disorder from using them.

The alert comes after the 28-year-old patient put on two stone in weight, developed severe stretch marks and could not conceive. Writing in The Lancet, researchers from the Hammersmith Hospital in London said that while such reactions were rare, many people were unaware that the creams - which contain the skin-bleaching chemical hydroxyquinone and high doses of steroids - could be harmful.
