Healthcare IT systems have some way to go before carrying out patient diagnosis, says a new report.
The report from wireless technology company Wireless Healthcare looks into a future where e-health can diagnose and monitor patients remotely using data collected from remote devices used by healthcare workers or the patients themselves. But Wireless Health recognise the need to reduce fear of technology in health staff.
The company calls for an increase in intelligence at the core of healthcare IT systems, saying current e-health devices lack the intelligence to identify trends indicating a high-risk patient. Instead the focus is on moving the patient around different care providers, says the report, citing NHS Direct as an example: those at risk will face a trip to hospital.
The company says current telehealth technology will save healthworkers and carers from unnecessary checks on chronically ill patients, but is not yet able to deal with emergencies. E-health technology is growing and is being increasingly used by patients to monitor them. But the current model is a short-term fix rather than a long-term play. It merely frees up resources within the healthcare system. A centralised electronic patient record, accessible by medical professional and healthcare technology, would collect and store data.
