Invest in consultant time says BMA in Scotland

The British Medical Association in Scotland has urged NHS managers to invest in consultant time if quality is to be maintained during a period of financial constraint.

The doctors’ organisation has published a new report on Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) and points out that the Scottish Government is shortly to publish a Quality Strategy for the NHS in Scotland with the role of consultants as clinical leaders being central to this agenda. The BMA says NHS managers must recognise that SPA time is an essential part of a consultant’s role.
