Invisible hearing aid launched

13th May 2011

A new invisible hearing device has been launched in the UK.

The device, which is 16mm long, is inserted deep into the ear canal and is designed to be so unobtrusive that users can forget they are wearing it.

Audiologist Paul Checkley from Harley Street Hearing in London described the Lyric device – which can be worn for 24 hours a day for up to four months at a time – as "like a contact lens for the ear".

The Royal National Institute for Deaf People says that while 9 million people in the UK are hearing-impaired, many are reluctant to wear ear devices.

Global Brand Manager Jon Law has been trialling the device for four months.

The 31-year-old said: “I got German Measles when I was six months old and was then diagnosed with hearing loss. I've tried so many hearing aids over the last 25 years and the Lyric finally makes me feel connected.

“The fact that it is invisible is superb. You don't feel you different to anybody. I can be around friends and just feel normal. I forget that I have a disability.”

The Lyric hearing aid is inserted just 4mm from the ear drum and allows the outer ear to direct sound into the ear canal more naturally.

Makers InSound Medical say this improves the wearer’s ability to work out what direction a sound is coming from and reduces feedback.

It can be worn whilst sleeping and during exercise and a magnetic tool is used to adjust the volume or switch it on or off.

We've been using these too somewhat in Denmark. My only advice is to be careful as it is sometimes displaced with certain exercises or movements, if improperly fitted. Best regards, Dr. Arne Eike (http://www.hca.dk/default_uk.aspx)
