Japanese officials blog diets

6th December 2006

Two high-ranking health officials in Japan will begin - and blog about - new diet and exercise regimes as part of a campaign to prevent obesity.

The two vice-ministers for health, Noritoshi Ishida and Keizo Takemi, have pledged to lose at least five kilos (11 lb) each in the next six months, and will record their progress, including how much they exercise, on a blog at the health ministry website.

Takemi, who is 166 cm (5ft 5in) tall and weighs 84 kg, has promised to take the lead in helping to promote awareness of obesity among Japanese.

Ishida has said he will walk for 10 minutes a day and take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Obesity is on the rise in Japan, where officials fear an increase in related illnesses like diabetes.
