Junior doctors' recruitment inept

8th May 2008

MPs say the government’s handling of the junior doctors’ recruitment crisis last year was inept.

However, the House of Commons’ health committee also placed some of the fault with the doctors who did not work in a co-ordinated manner to remedy the problems.

Problems arose after the government attempted to streamline doctor training and introduce online applications, a system which has since been scrapped. The resulting chaos led to doctors protesting outside the House of Parliament and also mounting a legal challenge.

The Commons committee said their had been inappropriate governance, management and communication by the Department of Health of the changes and the cross-party group of MPs also blamed the Home Office and DoH for failing to restrict open access to NHS posts from overseas doctors.

It described the new application system as little more than a “creative writing? exercise, which did not recognise the best applicants.

Chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson was also criticised for failing to take responsibility despite being the architect of the reforms.Health committee chairman Kevin Barron said: “The Department of Health, other relevant government departments and the medical profession must get a grip and resolve this mess that has diminished the reputations of all those concerned.?

British Medical Association chairman Dr Hamish Meldrum said: “We completely endorse the basic analysis that there was a massive systems failure and a complete lack of clear and effective leadership within the Department of Health.?

The DoH has apologised for the recruitment process problems and says it will consider the findings of the report.
