Launch of Mental Health Trust

3rd April 2006

A new mental health and disability trust has been launched following the merger of three trusts. Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust  will cover from Berwick to Houghton and across to the Cumbrian border.

The new trust will provide mental health, learning disability, neuro-rehabilitation and substance misuse services in the area. It will serve 1.4 million people, employ 7,500 staff and have an annual income of more than £250m.

It Trust will be one of the largest mental health and learning disability trusts in the country. It is a merger of Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland Mental Health NHS Trust, Northgate and Prudhoe NHS Trust and South of Tyne and Wearside Mental Health NHS Trust.

Chief Executive Alan Hall said that arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth transition and that they did not expect that 'users and carers will notice any immediate change as a result of the merger'.
