Legal action launched over heart surgery closure

Managers of the children’s heart surgery unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London are to launch legal action to stop it being closed under a long-awaited national review.

They say the decision to stop surgery at the hospital is "flawed", "not rational" and based on "subjective views rather than clinical reasons". In February the NHS Safe and Sustainable review recommended that cardiac surgery stops at four of 11 dedicated units in England, with services centralised. It felt that bigger centres were better able to provide the best care.
