'Live' donor transplant for baby

15th August 2011

A one month old baby has been given a liver transplant in which the organ was donated by a "live" donor, according to reports.

The baby had surgery at the Birmingham Children's Hospital after she developed neonatal haemochromatosis. The hospital confirmed that in some cases where a liver did not work in one patient it might work for another and could be transplanted very fast, which "could be termed as coming from a live donor". However, it was not able to offer confirmation that this case involved a live donor.
