Local organisations to make decisions about IT

15th September 2010

Health minister Simon Burns has announced that centralised and national approach of the National Programme for IT (NPfIT) in the NHS is no longer required.

He said trusts will instead be able to operate “a more locally-led plural system of procurement” and that a Department of Health review of the national programme had concluded that a new, “modular” approach to implementation should also be adopted. While acknowledging the importance of improving IT, he said the nationally imposed system is neither necessary nor appropriate to deliver that.
