Lower arthritis risk link to alcohol

18th June 2010

The charity Arthritis Research UK has urged caution after a report suggested that people who regularly consumer alcohol appear to be less likely to develop a number of arthritic conditions.

It said any protective effect of alcohol on inflammatory or degenerative types of arthritis was not properly understood and that drinking alcohol in excess could be especially dangerous in patients taking some anti-rheumatoid drugs that may cause liver damage. It comes as scientists at Leiden University Medical Centre in The Netherlands suggested there was a reduced risk among drinkers.
