Magnetic hip can last a lifetime

29th January 2008
British orthopaedic surgeons have developed a new hip replacement based on magnetic technology which could last "three times longer" than conventional replacements.

The MagneHip, developed by British orthopaedic surgeons Paul Lee and Michael Clarke, is the subject of testing in laboratories. Clinical NHS trials are due to start in three years. Paul Lee said: "It is all based on the workings of a car engine, which uses the same sort of system to make it last longer."
