'Mass quit' during Stoptober

The Stoptober campaign has suggested people give up cigarettes for four weeks as part of the first ever united stop smoking attempt.


Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation are backing the campaign, which they hope will prompt plenty of the eight million smokers in Britain to give up the habit.

Information has shown that people who give up for 28 days have five times the likelihood of quitting on a permanent basis.

According to public health specialists large campaigns involving big groups of people which use messages such as "why" and "how" to quit can have a significant effect.

Smokers who get involved with the campaign have free support to help them give up and a Facebook page and mobile phone app are also available.

The phone app sends users encouraging texts every day and helps them keep track of their progress, while the Facebook page lets them interact with other quitters.

Robert West, director of tobacco studies at University College London, told the BBC that large campaigns helped people quit because people are "social animals" who influence each other.
