Maternity bed closures fear

7th December 2006

A midwife has said the closure of a maternity ward is putting the lives of mothers and their babies at risk.

The anonymous employee at Milton Keynes Hospital said women were being turned away for induced pregnancies because of the closure of the six-bed unit.

But hospital mangers have denied the claim, and say beds are often closed when not in demand.

The unit has been closed as part of efforts to stop employing agency staff and save around £3m.
