Maternity wards closed

11th May 2007

The neonatal unit at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Belfast was closed to new admissions after three premature babies picked up an infection. The ward has been chemically decontaminated and babies affected were said to be responding well to anti-biotics.

The babies picked up a multi-resistant enterobacter infection and were isolated and closely monitored by specially-trained nurses. Health Minister in Northern Ireland Michael McGimpsey said there had been much investment in patient safety and while the situation was not acceptable, eliminating infections in hospitals was a priority.
